$1.5 Million to Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections for Flood Recovery

BATON ROUGE, La. — The Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections (LDPSC) will receive $1.5 million through disaster funding for emergency protective measures following the August floods. Funds are obligated through FEMA’s Public Assistance (PA) program.

PA recovery funding will reimburse LDPSC for emergency activities implemented at nine facilities throughout the state for male, female and youth offenders. Reimbursement costs include evacuation and shelter costs of offenders, emergency supplies and the cost of labor for correctional staff. Urgent response funding also includes transportation services for offenders at the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women (LCIW) that flooded as a result of the disaster.

As of April 28, FEMA’s PA program has obligated nearly $343 million to state governments and certain private nonprofits. Of the total amount, more than $242 million was designated to reimburse for emergency protective measures taken and debris cleanup in parishes covered by the August disaster declaration.

FEMA’s PA program helps to repair or replace critical infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, public buildings and schools. PA offers supplemental financial assistance on a cost-sharing basis. FEMA typically reimburses 75 percent of eligible PA expenses, however, FEMA will reimburse applicants 90 percent of eligible PA expenses given the magnitude of the August floods.
