Recovery Funds Continue to Flow to East Baton Rouge Schools

BATON ROUGE, La. — FEMA has approved an additional $1.1 million for flood recovery efforts of schools in East Baton Rouge.

Disaster funding will help the Runnels School with reimbursements for damaged equipment and contents. Runnels is the oldest private school in Baton Rouge. Items eligible for replacement include: desks, bookshelves, supplies, musical instruments and electronic and athletic equipment.

During the August floods, 16 school campuses throughout the parish flooded. Schools in East Baton Rouge have received more than $6 million. FEMA has awarded more than $80 million for schools for this disaster.

The Public Assistance program has obligated more than $352 million to reimburse local and state governments as well as certain private nonprofits for the repair or replacement of disaster-damaged facilities and infrastructure. Funds also cover debris removal and emergency response activities in designated parishes.

The Public Assistance program helps to repair or replace critical infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, public buildings and schools. PA offers supplemental financial assistance on a cost-sharing basis. FEMA typically reimburses 75 percent of eligible PA expenses. However, FEMA will reimburse applicants 90 percent of eligible PA expenses given the magnitude of the August floods.
