Ascension Parish School Board Receives $6M More in Disaster Aid

BATON ROUGE, La. — The Ascension Parish School Board will receive nearly $6.1 million for permanent school repairs following the August 2016 floods. The recently approved funding will help with campus-wide repair efforts at St. Amant High School.

To date, FEMA has reimbursed Louisiana schools more than $185 million for disaster-related projects through its Public Assistance program to assist with recovery following the August 2016 floods. This includes more than $51.6 million for the Ascension Parish School Board.

FEMA has provided funding to Ascension Parish School Board for costs associated with remediating and repairing schools, replacing damaged contents such as desks, books, sports equipment, computers, fixtures, and kitchen equipment and providing temporary facilities while repairs were underway.

To date, the Public Assistance program has reimbursed more than $582 million to state and local government entities as well as certain private nonprofits for August 2016 flood-related expenses. Eligible reimbursement projects include repairing or replacing disaster-damaged facilities and infrastructure, debris removal and emergency response activities.

FEMA has a long-term commitment to help Louisiana communities and critical infrastructure recover from the disaster. The agency continues collaborating with the state on recovery projects with 282 applicants in 26 parishes. FEMA typically reimburses 75 percent of eligible expenses. However, the agency will reimburse applicants 90 percent of eligible expenses given the magnitude of the August 2016 floods.
