Free legal Aid Available to Survivors of June flooding

Free legal aid is now available at all four disaster recovery centers in Hidalgo and Cameron counties.

Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid (TRLA) has sent attorneys and paralegals to all four DRCs to assist low-income survivors with multiple flood-related legal problems.

These legal experts can help survivors with many post-flooding civil legal issues they have. Issues could range from problems with landlords, flood-insurance claims for homes and cars, lost or damaged documents, and accessing aid from FEMA and other programs.

The attorneys and paralegals are on hand from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Monday through Friday.

Low-income flood survivors can also call TRLA’s disaster hotline (866) 757-1570 for help, and TRLA has also published “Know Your Rights” tip sheets and videos that cover the legal rights and options for disaster survivors. These media can be found at http://www.trla.org/disasters.

Survivors can register for FEMA assistance through Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018, online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov, or may call 800-621-3362 or (TTY) 800-462-7585. Those who use 711 Relay or Video Relay Services may call 800-621-3362. The toll-free telephone numbers are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time, seven days a week. Survivors may also visit a disaster recovery center to apply for assistance (find a disaster recovery center at https://egateway.fema.gov/ESF6/DRCLocator).
