FEMA Speaks Your Language

AUSTIN, Texas – Translators for Spanish-speaking survivors who want to apply for federal disaster assistance are available at disaster recovery centers, with FEMA’s Disaster Survivor Assistance Teams and by calling the FEMA registration line.

 

Translators are also available for other languages including Arabic, Burmese, Cambodian, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Tagalog, Thai, Urdu and Vietnamese.

 

When you call the FEMA toll-free number, 800-621-3362, you will be asked in English to press

1 for English, 2 for Spanish and 3 for other languages. If you do not press 1, 2 or 3, and do not hang up, an English-speaking operator will answer and a language translator will be brought on line to assist the caller in registering for FEMA assistance.

 

Disaster survivors who are deaf, hard-of-hearing or have a speech disability and use a TTY may call 800-462-7585 to register. Applicants who need an ASL interpreter for a home damage inspection can call 512- 977-6615 to schedule an interpreter to be at the inspection. ASL interpreters are also available for assistance at disaster recovery centers. Those who use 711 or Video Relay Service may call 800-621-3362.

Disaster survivors that have low-to-no vision also have tools such as magnifying glasses, and assisted listening devices as well as informational publications in Braille that can be found at any disaster recovery center.

 

Survivors can register for FEMA assistance through Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018, online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov, or may call 800-621-3362 or (TTY) 800-462-7585. The toll-free telephone numbers are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time, seven days a week.
