AUSTIN, Texas — The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded more than $6.8 million to the Harris County Flood Control District for debris removal following Hurricane Harvey.
The flood control district removed more than 135,000 cubic yards of vegetative debris left behind by Harvey that was deposited on roadways, residential streets, rights of way, culverts, bridges and drainage networks.
The total cost of the debris removal exceeded $7.6 million. FEMA’s grant of more than $6.8 million required $762,632, or a 10 percent nonfederal contribution, from the applicant.
The grant comes from FEMA’s Public Assistance grant program, which reimburses eligible applicants for actions taken in the immediate response to and during recovery from a disaster. These eligible applicants include states, federally recognized tribal governments, U.S. territories, local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations.
FEMA’s Public Assistance grant program provides project funding directly to the state for disbursement to applicants. The grant to the flood control district will be disbursed through the Texas Division of Emergency Management.
